Kuru D’Kar Trust
Towards a healthy, educated, dignified and empowered community in D’Kar
The goal of the Kuru D’Kar Trust is to assist the D’Kar community, especially those who are poor and marginalised, to develop sustainable livelihoods through education, community mobilisation and empowerment. The Trusts has the following major programmes.
Community Outreach and Mobilisation
The programme addresses health, youth and livelihood matters in D’Kar. This is further supported through mother tongue literacy and BOCODOL (Botswana College of Distance and Open Learning) in partnership with Naro Language Project.
Kuru Art Project
The contemporary San art project is in many ways the face of the Kuru Family of Organisations. Between 10 and 15 artists work in a variety of modern media. Outreach workshops are conducted in other San communities and exhibitions are organised worldwide.
The Dqãe Qare Game Reserve
The Dqãe Qare Game Reserve, a prime ethnic tourism destination, offers Western and local visitors, school groups and others, a cultural experience. It is a increasingly popular and a great cultural and hospitality experience. It has become a prime space for intergenerational learning amongst the San.
Museum and Culture Centre
The D’Kar Museum is popular with tourists who stop to read the history, see the exhibition and to purchase crafts, art and the ever-popular Kuru Art Calendar from the craft shop. The Centre and the Naro Giraffe Dance Group share workshops and cultural exchanges with San from different areas and organise the popular and annual Kuru Dance Festival. This is the largest cultural exchange for the San and attracts groups from all over Southern Africa. These workshops and cultural exchanges continue to pass along the traditional practices to the younger generation, and re-establish self-esteem in the communities.
