Reviving the cultural identity and heritage of the San in South Africa

SASI supports the revival of the cultural identity and heritage of the San people of South Africa and promotes the socio-economic development of the San communities. SASI works mainly in the Northern Cape with the approximately 7,500 members of the ‡Khomani, !Xun and Khwe Communities.

SASI’s Programmes

1: The Legal Support programme supports community structures to secure long term benefits, resulting from negotiations with government and other parties, including the successful land claims acquisition and benefit sharing agreements.

2: Our Leadership Empowerment and Capacity Building programme serves representative leaders and youth members from a variety of community structures.

3: Through our Health and Social Care Project the Community Health Care Centre in the Kalahari support community health, generates funds through the sale of herbal medicines and works in co-operation with traditional health care.

4: A programme on Cultural Resource Management (CRM) and the management of intangible heritage. This also includes Training of trackers & field guides for eco-tourism projects, training of crafts persons and other livelihood support such as cultural tourism.
